Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre

Intermediate Acting: Provides introduction to American Method Acting styles. The class focuses on achieving realism in performance, differing from classical acting styles, which have traditionally featured exaggerated emotions much bigger than life. The goal will be to capture verisimilitude in the acting performances. (Taught as a combined class with advanced acting.)

Advanced Acting: Provides advanced technical actor training in classical acting styles based on the expression of the body, voice, imagination, personalizing, improvisation, external stimuli, and script analysis. (Taught as a combined class with intermediate acting.)

Movement and Voice I and II: Combining vocal clarity and body movement work, the class provides warm-up exercises and spatial awareness exercises to students studying the art of acting. The exercises are designed to build the actor’s instrument (the self). The class will focus on the movement philosophy/technique known as viewpoints and composition. Viewpoints and composition is a philosophy translated into a technique for (1) training actors (2) building ensemble and (3) creating movement for the stage.

Beginning Acting: This class is designed to help students understand the basics of giving a credible acting performance. It will build understanding, respect, and admiration of the acting process for aspiring actors. We will discuss and practice methods and techniques, which will enrich your knowledge and experience of creating believable characters in a theatrical performance. We will dissect, rehearse, and perform our various acting projects.

Introduction to Theatre: Theatre Appreciation is an introductory class that surveys the basic elements and theories of theatrical production. In addition, it will cover a brief overview of theatre from its theorized beginning to modern times, with special attention on how theatre has evolved as an artistic expression and experience.

Elements I and II: Exists to introduce students to the basic elements of stagecraft and/or Cinematic Arts and Theatre (CAT) production, and to gain hands-on experience in the various aspects of a CAT production. There are specific tasks associated with each CAT production that must be completed for the production to succeed. The completion of those tasks is the primary goal of this class. Elements II is designed to provide students with the opportunity to take on a leadership role within the context of CAT production by filling vital production staff positions. Responsibility goes beyond that of just participating as a performer or working construction hours in the shops.

Actor’s Toolbox, Lead Teacher: During this 10-week class, teaching 6th-8th graders, we will grow our skills of sensory awareness, active listening and reacting, building ensemble, and vocal and physical expressiveness as a pathway into strong character development. We will work with movement practices and improv to explore action, character, and motivation pushing further into ensemble and partner scene work. In addition, students will create and develop their own presentations highlighting their performance ensemble skills for our final day and sharing.

FUNdamentals of Actors, Lead Teacher: During this 10-week class, teaching grades 4th-5th, we will use our bodies, voices, minds, and imagination to explore the basics of acting. We will play and discover self-awareness, focus, character objectives, response to others, and the development and ownership of scenes. We will work with movement practices and improv to explore action, character, and motivation. In addition, students will be set up with fundamental performance skills including; stage presence, movement for actor exploration, maintenance and creation of blocking, and ensemble and partner work.

Create a Story, Assistant Teacher: During this 8-week class, assistant teaching K-3rd graders, we will discover theatre and movement practices throughout personal creation of a story. We will integrate play and expressiveness to develop skills through exploration of story, sensory awareness, creative characters, and embarking on grand adventures. In addition, as we move through the semester we will develop OUR telling of a classic fairytale for an informal sharing on the last day of class.

EC Drama, Assistant Teacher: During this 14-week class, assistant teaching Pre-K 3- 1st grade, we will be introduced to foundations of theatre. Starting with the idea of Actor Tools, we will look at Voice, Body, Props, Partners, and introductory games to theatre and performance.

During this 14 week class, teaching Pre-K 2- 4 we will discover an introduction to theatre through movement and play. We will work with our body, voice, and imagination to explore creatively. Through the use of books, pantomime, partner work, and props, and images we will immerse ourselves in an introduction to theatre that not only develops critical thinking skills but our fine and gross motor skills as well.

Culmination led to student projects directing 10-minute scenes.

Cabin projects included, puzzles, stools, benches, slingshots, catapults, wooden dolls, derby cars, board games, string art, wooden plaques, and ideas of the children’s imagination.

Maintained and operated all power tools and machinery of the camp for camper and staff use including; compound miter saw, band saw, table saw, drills, impact drivers, electrical sanders, pneumatic nail gun, and basic hand tools.

Crafted and assisted in programming scenery for a variety of activities including ramps and cut-outs for carnivals, adjusting and attaching props for evening programs, and striking set-pieces after the programs finished.
